This vintage map was created by Giovanni Maria Cassini, a prominent Italian geographer, cartographer, and globemaker of the 18th Century. He was also a notable astronomer who contributed much to this field. In 1664 he measured the period of rotation of Jupiter and two years later did the same for Mars. With his telescope, he was the first to discover four of Saturn’s moons.
This globe depicts the three voyages of Captain James Cook in 1790.
The overall design was not altered with the exception of the original coordinate lines, which would have resulted in a mismatch on the reprojection. Some small imperfections obtained from the source image still remain.
